If you have ADHD, or are struggling with concentration, focus, planning, organization, time management and procrastination, coaching might be right for you. Many people prefer the optimistic strength-based and solution-focused approach of coaching in managing their ADHD or ADHD-like symptoms. In coaching we don’t look at your ADHD as a disorder, but rather as a different way of being in the world to be recognized and valued. In fact, ADHD is a spectrum of paradoxical traits where every problematic characteristic has its useful opposite. Perhaps you can recognize some of these opposing attributes: a tendency to lack focus, coupled with the capacity for intense concentration when something is interesting; poor time management, procrastination, missed deadlines, but able to accomplish a lot in a short time; generally disorganized but careful and precise on important projects; impulsivity and problematic risk taking paired with creative and spontaneous problem solving. These are just some examples.
According to ADHD experts Net Hallowell, MD and John Ratey, MD, “attention deficit” is a misnomer. It is actually an overabundance of attention that is constantly looking for an outlet. Hallowell and Ratey compare ADHD to a “Ferrari engine with bicycle brakes.”
In ADHD coaching, we will focus on building better brakes so that you can get the most out of your racing car engine. In order to strengthen your brakes, we will work on your Executive Function. That is a fancy way of saying that we will work on giving you tools to improve your Focus and Attention, Working Memory, Planning and Organization, Emotional Regulation and Impulse Control. To maximize the potential of your Ferrari engine, we will work together to recognize, put into words and intentionally play to your unique strengths, those areas where you have a competitive edge over others.
But the coaching journey goes beyond ADHD itself. My coaching centers on helping you not just to manage your ADHD traits, but to thrive—equipping you with strategies and insights to achieve your goals while embracing the whole of who you are. It’s about growth, self-discovery, and crafting a fulfilling path forward.
